There are a lot of things that affect the ambiance of your
home…the cohesiveness of your furniture, the style, or its
visual flow. Cleanliness is one aspect of this as well, though
most people only focus on visual cleanliness and
organization. There is one underrated, unseen factor that is
also affecting the ambiance of your home, and it’s your
indoor air quality. The air quality of your home affects the
freshness and serenity of your day-to-day life.

Air quality can be improved by air purifiers. They can help
mitigate pollutants to make a safer and healthier environment. Some purifiers use filtering technology to combat dust, smoke, and other airborne pollutants. Others use technology to fill the air with ions that help remove or deactivate pathogens.

Truthfully, the market is saturated with different types of air purifiers to fit varying needs — but which one is the most effective?

Ozone Generators

A common solution for combating low indoor air quality – especially when odors are present – is ozone. Ozone is a molecule comprised of three oxygen atoms. The third oxygen atom is loosely bonded to the others, so it can easily break apart and attach itself to pollutants. This is why ozone generators are good at eliminating odors: by attaching to other molecules, they cause contaminants to precipitate and become neutralized.

Ozone generators are often used to kill mold, mildew, and other germs. This is commonly done with high concentrations. To avoid unwanted health effects, ozone generators are run in unoccupied rooms. Since mold is much tougher to treat, ozone generators must run for at least 30 hours. This is a one-time occurrence and can’t be done continuously; you should use an ozone generator for a basement with a strong mildewy smell or mold problem. Once ozone remediates your mold problems and has been ventilated from the room you treated, it does nothing to prevent mold from returning.

The same highly reactive chemical properties that make high concentrations of ozone very effective at combating lingering odors also make breathing ozone a serious health risk. Inhalation of low amounts of ozone may damage the lungs, leading to chest pain, coughing, and shortness of breath. It may also worsen chronic respiratory diseases like asthma. Higher levels of exposure may lead to more severe long-term
respiratory issues or a reduced respiratory immune function.

Bi-polar ionization purifiers

Bi-polar ionization (BPI) purifiers are a common type of air purifier on the market used mainly for airborne viruses, allergens, and other contaminants.

The devices split water molecules in the air into positively and negatively charged ions. These ions grasp onto unwanted airborne particles like viruses and pollen and are removed through an air filter. However, those pollutants might remain if the purifier’s circulation isn’t strong enough to be passed back through the air filter. Also, BPI ions can cling to airborne particles that then stick to surfaces in a room, creating a characteristic black streak on walls.

Though they are effective in eliminating bacteria and viruses by removing hydrogen, this effectiveness is not long-lasting. The ions only last for about a minute; if you’re trying to clean a bigger environment, the location of your devices might inhibit this. If BPI purifiers are installed in your ductwork, the treatment may not reach contaminated places that are further from the source due to the short lifespan of the ions. Portable air purifiers solve this problem somewhat, but they often use a smaller concentration of purifying ions. This means they won’t be as effective for troublesome issues that cause long-term health effects, such as mold.

BPI purifiers might also produce unwanted byproducts, such
as ozone and free-radicals. As mentioned, ozone can have negative effects on your lungs. Not all BPI purifiers emit ozone, so it’s important
to look for BPI purifiers that are ozone-free.

Some bi-polar ionization devices come in the form of tubes, which are not cost-effective. When buying these devices, you are signing up for annual replacement costs. However, there are needlepoint bipolar ionization devices that are self-cleaning, but these typically run $200-300 more.

HEPA-only purifiers

If you’re someone who suffers from allergies sparked by dust or pollen, then HEPA-only purifiers might work for you. True HEPA (High-Efficiency Particulate Air) purifiers capture 99.75% of airborne pollutants as small as 0.3 microns and 95% of 0.1 micron particles. Some HEPA filters include Activated Carbon (or “charcoal”) to absorb odors and volatile organic chemicals (VOCs). However, this filtration system can only remove airborne pollutants that pass through the filter. They cannot purify surfaces. So, they will not help with that persistent mold problem in your bathroom, for example.

PCO purifiers

The majority of the market for air purifiers consists of the types above, but another innovative technology with a winning solution is PCO. PCO technology can proactively clean the air and surfaces in a space. Its technology uses a light-powered chemical process to generate a continuous army of ions that proactively break down pollutants outside of the purifier. It’s a highly effective purification technology that’s even been used by NASA on the International Space Station. One brand using this technology to reinvent indoor air purification through PCO purification is Puraclenz.

All Puraclenz purifiers use a patented, evolved form of PCO to create an extraordinarily high concentration of ozone-free ions. These ions go beyond conventional air filters such as HEPA that have no impact on surface pollutants. PCO and BPI purifiers differ from conventional air purifiers in their ability to destroy pollutants with ions. If you have mold spores, viruses, or bacteria in hard-to-reach places, then Puraclenz can help destroy or deactivate those pathogens with its proactive technology. Puraclenz technology also treats bacteria, viruses, and mold spores mid-air, directly improving the indoor air quality and the overall cleanliness of your home.

If you’re in the market for an air purifier that prevents mold or bacterial growth, chances are you’re also looking to curb the odors that accompany these issues. Ozone generators are helpful in odor elimination, but the ozone poses health threats. Puraclenz offers odor reduction without harmful ozone and all their products are certified ozone free. Puraclenz runs continuously to automatically purify your air and surfaces while you and your family safely remain in the space.

If your primary concern isn’t dust or smoke, it’s a great solution. Although Puraclenz purifiers are at a higher price point than cheaper filtration-based solutions, it’s the best technology for continuous air and surface purification. You are paying for a long-lasting solution rather than a temporary fix.

Bottom Line

When it comes to your home, you have to choose what is best for your health and happiness. This means evaluating the concerns in your home and finding the best solution that will address them.

Ozone generators are good for combating odors and mold, but might present unwanted health issues in the long run. BPI purifiers are a cost-friendly method for using ions to address bacteria and other pollutants. However, their effectiveness depends on the location of the device, and they also lack portability and high ion concentrations. HEPA-only purifiers are highly effective in combating dust pollutants through air filters, which is beneficial for those prone to allergies. However, they lack the ability to destroy the contaminants, and they don’t treat pathogens on surfaces.

This is why Photon is changing the game with its PCO technology. Only Photon has the high ion concentration and strength to proactively purify both the surfaces and air in your home. You’ll feel the difference in the air.
